Oscar Mendoza

April 23, 1944 — March 25, 2020

Mr. Oscar Mendoza entered the Kingdom of God peacefully on Wednesday, March 25, 2020 surrounded by his loving wife and son Marco after a long illness.

Mr. Mendoza was a native Laredoan who graduated from Martin High School in 1964.  He went into the military in March 1965 to serve his country with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.  He returned and married his high school sweetheart, Griselda Chapa. Upon his return from the Army, he worked for KGNS as production manager and then proceeded to higher education. He then graduated from Laredo State University, and thus began his teaching career with the LISD School District. His first teaching assignment was at Santa Maria Elementary.  Later, he went on to M.S. Ryan Elementary school working under the Migrant Program. There, he and Coach Roberto San Miguel initiated the first basketball program for the school. Oscar continued his teaching career at Memorial Middle School where he taught for 28 years teaching all subjects from English, Math, Science, Social Studies and finally ending his last year before retirement in 2010 as a PE Coach.   Besides teaching in the public schools, he also spent much time teaching GED and ESL at Laredo Community College. His expertise in driver’s education allowed him to instruct with the Laredo Job Corp for many years. His love for sports and his devotion towards his students helped him have a great career.

Mr. Mendoza was such a loving husband, father, brother and grandpa. He was a tough man with a gentle side towards his family. He cared deeply about the well-being of his family and always made sure their needs were met first than his. He enjoyed life to the fullest. Dancing with his wife, smiling and joking.
