Arthur Innis

April 30, 1935 — November 18, 2019

On, Monday, November 18, 2019, Arthur L. Innis, loving husband and father of three children, passed away at the age of 84.

Art was born on April 30, 1935, in Sandusky, MI to Arthur and Viola (Noble) Innis. He earned his BA in 1957 from Central Michigan University and an MA in Teaching Spanish from the University of New Mexico in 1964. While in graduate school, Art accompanied his roommate to a wedding in Monterrey, NL, where he met Myrna Jimenez Verastegui. They were married in Monterrey in 1965, 2 years after they first met. The couple moved first to Lansing, Michigan, and then to Santa Maria, California, where Art taught high school Spanish. On a 1968 trip from California to visit family in Monterrey, Art and Myrna stopped in Laredo. Wanting to live closer to family, and after inquiring about a job at Laredo Community College, he was hired as a Spanish instructor. Art spent the next 31 years at LCC. Although Art served in various administrative positions—including administrative assistant to then LJC President Domingo Arechiga and later Dean of Educational Services—his love of teaching Spanish kept him returning to the classroom throughout his tenure at the college.

Art was an active member of Christ Church Episcopal where he served on the church vestry, as a lay minister, and as a pianist for Spanish-language services. After retirement from LJC, he joined Myrna in helping organize what would become Christ Church’s weekly New Leaven Food Ministry.

Arthur was preceded in death by his father, Arthur, and mother, Viola, as well as by his brother, William. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Myrna, and his three children, Arthur (Angela), Michael (Heather), and Edward as well as by his sister Doris. He is also survived by his nine grandchildren: Fox, Emily, Aidan, Carson, Mateo, Aaron, Alessandra, Andrew, and Anthony.

A celebration of Arthur Innis’s life will be held on Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Christ Church Episcopal, 2320 Lane Street, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m.; his funeral service will commence at 11 a.m. with Father Paul Frey as the celebrant .
