SUZANNE M. "SUZIE" SCHAFER

September 09, 1953 – August 20, 2022

Suzanne Marie Schafer was called home to be with Our Lord on August 20, 2022. Born in Laredo, Texas on September 9, 1953, she was a lifelong parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church where she gave of her time in many areas such as Altar Server Coordinator, Lector and Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court Isabella, as well as the Altar Society.

She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Sarah Schafer.

She is survived by her brother, Joe Mike (Celeste) Schafer; her niece, Jennifer (Brian) Greco; her nephew, Michael (Nicole) Schafer; and her great-nephew, Oliver Greco; as well as countless cousins in the Schafer and Devine families.

Suzie left a mark in this world that will not be easily forgotten. She began her Catholic education at Mary Help of Christians School where her elementary education was shaped by the Salesian Sisters. After graduating from Ursuline Academy, she continued her education at Laredo Junior College where she was one of the first members of their ROTC program. Upon graduating from Texas A&I University at Laredo, she began her lifelong commitment to education which spanned more than 40 years.  While teaching at Mary Help of Christians School, she imparted her knowledge of various subjects to her elementary students.  You could find her helping with the many fundraisers like the annual Thanksgiving Turkey Bingo and Spring Jamaica. Upon moving to St. Augustine High School, she devoted her teaching expertise to the Religion Department. Aside from her classroom duties, she organized retreats, led prayer services, and assisted in preparing school Masses. She was also very active with assisting the sports program.  It was her spiritual nature that set her on the path to be involved with her parish church, Blessed Sacrament.

Suzie always found the time to help others in need. Everyone she met quickly became a friend and family member. There were countless times when she took them to doctors’ appointments (in and out of town), to get groceries and medications, to church services, or to lunch. Other times she just spent time visiting them, especially if they were home bound. Her heart was overflowing with love, and her generosity had no limit.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the nurses, therapists and staff at Retama Manor Nursing Center Laredo - South, Dr. Milton Haber, and Dr. Eduardo Miranda for their support and care.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Blessed Sacrament Church, Salesian Sisters, or St. Augustine High School.
