Rolando R. Ramirez Sr. passed away peacefully on October 7, 2026.

Born in Falfurrias, Texas, Rolando moved to Laredo at the age of seven. It was there that he built his life, raised his family, and devoted himself to serving his community. At the age of 17, Rolando enlisted in the United States Army in 1950, during the Korean conflict. He completed basic training with the 82nd Airborne Division before attending jump school. He was then assigned to the 508th Airborne Infantry, known as the “Red Devils.”

During his service, he survived a serious parachuting accident when his parachute failed to deploy properly, resulting in several months of hospitalization and recovery. Demonstrating remarkable resilience, he elected to continue his military career and was assigned to the 11th Airborne Division, where he served until completing his military service in 1953.

Following his military service, Rolando returned to Texas and began a distinguished career in law enforcement. At the age of 22, he joined the Webb County Sheriff’s Department in Laredo, which at the time consisted of only four deputies. Beginning his career as a jail guard, he worked his way through the ranks, becoming a deputy and later serving as captain. Throughout his career, he served under four sheriffs. His dedication, leadership, and steady presence helped shape the department during a period of growth and change.

He concluded his career serving as a bailiff for County Court at Law Judge Antonio Zardenetta, continuing his commitment to the justice system and the community he had faithfully served for so many years.

Mr. Ramirez retired after 35 years of service, leaving a legacy of integrity, respect, and unwavering commitment to his community.

Outside of his career, Rolando enjoyed fishing and hunting with his identical twin brother, Rene. He also found peace in working and spending time at the ranch, a place that held special meaning for him and where the brothers shared many cherished moments.

He especially enjoyed his walks at the mall, where he met with fellow veterans over coffee and conversation. These gatherings became an important part of his routine, allowing him to maintain friendships with those who shared his military experience. He continued this tradition for as long as his health allowed.

Rolando will be remembered for his strength, humility, and deep loyalty to family and friends. His life was defined by service—to his country, his community, and those he loved.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alicia Garcia Ramirez; his parents, Serafin and Esperanza Ramirez; his brothers, Homero Ramirez and Ramiro Ramirez; his identical twin brother, Rene Ramirez; and his sister, Irma Ramirez Vela.

Left to cherish his memory are his children, Rolando Ramirez Jr. (Annabel), Cordelia Escudero (the late Jose), Leticia Uribe (Sergio), and Luis Ramirez (Irma); his grandchildren, Jason Ramirez, Luis Ramirez Jr., Jacqueline Uribe Rodriguez, Catherine Uribe Arellano, Joe Escudero, Alexandra Ramírez Paz, Dante Ramirez, Elizabeth Ramirez Watkins, and Jorge Escudero; his 10 great-grandchildren; and his beloved nieces and nephews, along with other relatives, caregivers, and friends. The family extends special thanks to Dr. Zamarron and his staff, as well as the local Veterans Department and its staff, for their care and support.
