Rodolfo Ibarra, a well-respected educator and beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on March 31, 2026. During the 91 years of his life, Rodolfo was a hard-working man with a heart of gold who believed that a good education would open doors for a prosperous life. As a teacher and mentor, he touched many lives, and many of his former students pursued professional careers in education, law, government, and the military.
Rodolfo was born in Laredo, Texas, on April 29, 1934, to Roberto and Esperanza Rangel Ibarra. In 1952, he graduated from Martin High School, and the next year, he joined the Air Force. He served from 1953 to 1957, during which he was stationed in Tripoli, Libya; Denver, Colorado; and Waco, Texas. In addition, Rodolfo attended Laredo Junior College. Then, he moved to Kingsville to attend Texas A&I University (now Texas A&M University-Kingsville), where he received his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education, specializing in History and Government. In 1960, Rodolfo pursued his Master of Science degree in History and Government and started teaching eighth-grade Social Studies at L.J. Christen Junior High School (now L.J. Christen Middle School). There he met the love of his life and soulmate, Elsa Margarita Medina, and they married on October 20, 1962. Their love lasted sixty-three years. A year later, Rodolfo took a teaching position at Martin High School, where he taught history, government, and civics.
In 1968, Rodolfo joined the faculty at Laredo Junior College (now Laredo College). Later in his career, he took additional graduate studies at Texas Christian University, Abilene Christian University, Laredo State University, and the University of Texas Extension Course at Laredo (Community) College to nurture his passion for teaching social sciences. In addition, he was a member of the Texas State Teachers Association and the Texas Junior College Teachers Association, where he served as a State Officer. After a distinguished career as a Government Instructor at the college, Rodolfo retired in 1989 to spend more time with his family.
During his retirement, Rodolfo and Elsa traveled around the United States, Canada, and Mexico. They shared adventures in places such as the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, stayed at the Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, watched the Grand Canyon vistas, enjoyed “Jersey Boys” on Broadway in New York, and admired the scenic beauty of Niagara Falls. Above all, they traveled to Florida, where they spent time with their son, Carlos, and his wife, Diane, and their granddaughters, Nora and Sara. In addition, Rodolfo and Elsa were devout Catholics and active members of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, where Rodolfo served as an altar server, lector, and eucharistic minister, and, with his wife, served as coordinator of the St. Vincent de Paul Society. As a member of the Webb County Heritage Foundation, he led walking tours of historical sites around Laredo.
Rodolfo was preceded in death by his parents, Roberto and Esperanza Rangel Ibarra; his in-laws, Jesus Maria Medina and Margarita Villarreal Medina; his brothers, Eduardo (Maria Luisa†) Ibarra, Roberto L. (Guadalupe†) Ibarra, Juan Alberto (Margarita) Ibarra, and Esperanza Rosa Ibarra Lima (Roberto†); his sister-in-law, Minerva G. Ibarra; his nieces, Alma Nora Ibarra and Patricia Ibarra Leal; and his son, Javier Ricardo Ibarra.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Elsa Margarita Medina Ibarra; his son, Carlos Alberto (Laura Diane) Ibarra; his granddaughters, Nora Angelica Ibarra and Sara Michelle Ibarra; his sisters, Ana Maria Ibarra and Dolores Sylvia Ibarra Espinoza; his brothers, Francisco (Minerva†) Ibarra and Juventino (Minerva) Ibarra; his sister-in-law, Margarita Ramirez Ibarra; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
