Roberto Vela

Roberto Vela, beloved community leader and family man, passed away on April 13, 2024, at the age of 75.

Born in Mexico City, Mr. Vela was inspired by his father, the pioneering broadcast journalist Guillermo O. Vela, to study Communications Sciences at the Universidad Iberoamericana. After graduation he founded the award-winning firm Roberto Vela & Asociados, which developed and managed communications campaigns for Mexican and multinational corporations. Mr. Vela also had deep roots in South Texas, however, and in time he moved with his family to Laredo and became a successful real estate developer, cattleman and rancher.

Gregarious, witty, and with an unmistakable mischievous streak, Mr. Vela loved people. He treasured his friends dearly and was universally admired for his kindness, integrity, and sense of humor. In addition, he loved animals, doted on the many dogs and horses that faithfully accompanied him throughout his life, and was adored by them in return.

Mr. Vela was preceded in death by his parents, Guillermo and Adela Vela, and his siblings, Guillermo, Cynthia, and Diana. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Cecilia; his children, Roberto (Jonathan Bents), Guillermo, and Mariana (Paul Montalvo); and his siblings, Patricia and Hugo (Arlette). His legacy of love, loyalty, generosity and service will be cherished by all who were fortunate enough to know him.

The family will receive condolences on Friday evening, April 19, 2024 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 1410 Jacaman Rd.; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Saturday morning, April 20, 2024 departing at 9:15 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels to San Agustin Cathedral for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.

Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the family plot of the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
