The Matriarch of the Gutierrez de Lachica family, Ofelia Gutierrez de Lachica, 89, entered into eternal rest November 06, 2018, surrounded by her devoted and loving family. Ofelia was the daughter of the prominent business man the late Teodosio A. Gutierrez and Ofelia Garcia de Gutierrez. She was born on February 13, 1929.

Ofelia was the youngest and the only girl. Her brothers Adolfo, Hector, Armando, T.A. “Beto” and Jose Ricardo “Pepe” took care of her throughout her young adult life. When her father passed at 50 years of age, her mother sent her to Our Lady of the Lake boarding school in San Antonio, Texas. After graduating from Our Lady of the Lake she returned to Laredo to continue in the family business. In 1946 the City of Laredo held its first Miss Laredo Competition during the WBCA festivities. It was during this time that Ofelia was crowned as the First Miss Laredo in 1946. Two years later she married the love of her life Alberto J. de Lachica.

Ofelia worked for the Laredo Independent School District for 30 years before retiring to enjoy traveling with her husband and to visit their grandchildren. Ofelia was a devout Catholic and a parishioner of St. Peter the Apostle Church; she was also a member of the Order of the Alhambra Laredo Chapter, The St. Anne’s Altar Society and the Catholic Daughters of America organization. In addition, Ofelia was a member of the BEYPE Social Club where they enjoyed the comraderies of social gatherings and afternoon meriendas. Ofelia was a beautiful person who enjoyed life to the fullest; she was a strong and proud lady, particularly to family values, customs, principles, and traditions. She will be dearly missed by her family.

The family wishes to thank Dr. Dennis Cantu for his utmost care given to our mother. Special thanks to her caregivers Monie, Karina and Beatriz who cared for her unconditionally.
