It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mario Alberto Garza, who left this world on April 21, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on August 23, 1947, Mario was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, whose life was marked by love, dedication, and a deep commitment to his family.
Mario was a proud U.S. Army Veteran, and a dedicated educational leader within the United Independent School District, where he served as an assistant principal, positively impacting the lives of countless students and educators alike.
He is preceded in death by his parents: Amalio & Emma Garza; brother: Amalio Omar Garza; and parents-in-law: Ildefonso & Celia Ramirez.
Mario is survived by his beloved wife of 55 years of marriage, Emma Alicia Garza, whose unwavering support and companionship enriched his life. He took great pride in his children, Elizabeth Ann (Richard) Ortiz, Katherine Laura (Marc Alexander) Gutierrez, and Amanda Marie (Carlos Arturo) Fernandez, who carry forward his legacy of kindness and strength. As a doting grandfather, he brought joy to the lives of his grandchildren: Kayla A. Menchaca, David Nix, Kristen Nicole Ferreyro, Hernan Alfonso Ferreyro II, Gerardo Evan Gutierrez, Marcela Alexandra Gutierrez, Morgan Fernandez, Eryn Fernandez and great-grandson: Elijah Matthew Gutierrez. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, other loving relatives and friends, all of whom will carry his memory in their hearts.
The family will be receiving condolences on Sunday afternoon, April 26, 2026 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels, 719 N. Loring at Cortez, where a Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Monday morning, April 27, 2026, departing at 9 a.m. from Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels to St. Joseph Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m.
Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Veterans section of the City of Laredo Cemetery.
Military Honors will be provided by the U.S. Army Honor Guard and the Laredo Veterans Honor Guard.
The family would like to extend their most heartfelt gratitude to La Esperanza Home Health & Hospice, Yajaira Rosas, Mari Hernandez, Cynthia Solano, Lupita Perez, Pat Cantu, R.N., and Martha Segovia, L.V.N. as well as loving friends: Eduardo & Patricia Rendon and Efrain & Diana Lopez.
