It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Mario A. Fuentes, beloved husband, devoted father, and proud veteran, who departed this life on February 26, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on February 11, 1948, Mario lived a life characterized by humility, love, and unwavering support for his family and community.
Holding the rank of Private First Class (E-2), Mario epitomized the Marine Corps’ values of honor, courage, and commitment. As a wounded warrior, Mario proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps, where he demonstrated immense bravery and resilience as a Vietnam veteran. His courage in the face of adversity earned him two Purple Heart medals, a testament to his selflessness and dedication to defending the freedoms we hold dear. Alongside these distinguished honors, he was awarded numerous commendations, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
In addition to his military service, Mario was a devoted family man. He cherished the moments spent with his loved ones and was known for his unwavering support and encouragement. He was a humble individual who approached life with kindness and grace, inspiring those around him through his actions and words.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Antonia Fuentes; his parents: Enrique and Belen Fuentes; his brothers, Gustavo and Enrique Fuentes Jr.; his sisters, Graciela Villarreal, and Lilia Espinoza; and his great-grandson, Sebastian Marmolejo.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Ana Laura Vassos (George†), Sylvia Marmolejo (Juan), Gloria Gaitan (Raul Ortiz), Mario Fuentes Jr. (Michelle), and Marco Fuentes (Sylvia); his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and his sister, Ernestina Carrizalez (Jose); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
The family will be receiving condolences on Tuesday evening, March 3, 2026 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels & Cremation Services, 719 Loring at Cortez; where a Vigil for the Deceased and Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.
Funeral Services will be conducted on Wednesday morning, March 4, 2026 departing at 8:30 a.m. from Joe Jackson Heights Funeral Chapels to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:00 a.m.
Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the family plot of the Laredo City Cemetery.
