Manuel G. Escamilla, Jr., 89, joined our Lord in His heavenly kingdom on Sunday, January 4, 2026.
Born and raised in Laredo, he took great pride in his hometown, its history, and the families that made the community as vibrant as it was. He graduated with the Class of 1956 from Martin High School, where he ran track during what he proudly described as the “Greatest Era of Tiger Athletics.” He later attended the University of Houston, studying radio and television communications while also competing as a varsity runner and developing a lifelong love for all aspects of Cougar athletics.
With a sense of adventure and a passion for cinema, he moved to Los Angeles in the early 1960s, where he worked on several movies and television shows. Those willing to listen were often left in awe by his remarkable stories—tales of celebrity encounters, behind-the-scenes moments, and the excitement of the entertainment world. These experiences seemed almost unimaginable, especially coming from such a unassuming man from Laredo, whose life quietly intersected with moments many could scarcely believe.
An avid runner (well into his 80’s) and devoted fan of track and field, he remained a student of the sport his entire life, never allowing a meet to go unwatched on tv. After his time as a student-athlete, he began his coaching career at the University of Houston, serving briefly as coach of the university’s freshman track team.
For more than 20 years, he served as the track and cross-country coach at St. Augustine High School, where he influenced generations of young athletes. At meets, “Coach Escamilla” was easily recognized by his fishing hat and long-sleeved, four-pocket guayabera, a familiar and comforting presence on the sidelines.
A devoted Catholic and longtime parishioner of Blessed Sacrament Church, Meme took great pride in his faith and in his history of service to the Church. He served as an usher for many decades and could almost always be found at the 10:00 a.m. Mass, faithfully stationed in the back rows, quietly welcoming parishioners with a warm smile and familiar presence.
In July of 1970, he married Ann L. Leech and began a family life that would become his greatest joy and defining legacy. He never needed or wanted more than a quiet dinner with family and the front door of the house was literally always open for anyone to share a story around the table. His love for his grandchildren was absolute, and their love for him was a constant source of joy and pride.
The family would like to especially thank the many dear friends who shared in the joys of his life. The names Galo, Beto, Hector, Dickie, Fred, Pepe, Chester, Alfred, Pat, Rodrigo and many others were spoken often, woven into countless stories, and always brought a smile to his face and warmth to his heart.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Ann L. Escamilla; his parents, Manuel Garcia Escamilla and Esther Herrera; his siblings, Juan F. Rodriguez Jr., and Laurita Rodriguez.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, Cyndi (Vincent) Cartelli, and Manuel E. Escamilla; his grandchildren, Manuel, Ana, and Danika; his sister, Christina Tolin, sister-in-law Laura Rodriguez; as well as nieces, nephews, extended relatives, and friends.
