Jorge Javier Elizondo

Jorge Javier Elizondo, of Laredo, Texas, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2026, at the age of 77 after a courageous battle with cancer.

Born in Laredo on November 2, 1948, Jorge lived a life defined by curiosity, discipline, humor, generosity, and deep devotion to his family. He was a cowboy, rancher, martial artist, craftsman, public servant, storyteller, philosopher, and lifelong student of the world around him. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend.

Jorge began working at a young age in his father’s garage, pumping gas, washing cars, and repairing tires. He graduated from San Agustin High School on May 25, 1966, and attended the University of Houston before returning to Laredo to complete his studies at Texas A&I University. He later returned to the University of Houston, where he worked as a graduate research assistant in sociology.

While attending the University of Houston, Jorge met the love of his life, Norma Villarreal Elizondo. He often said he loved her from the moment he first saw her. They were married on June 6, 1970, beginning a partnership that would span more than 56 years and serve as the foundation of their family’s life together.

After returning to Laredo, Jorge and Norma built a home centered on family, loyalty, laughter, and togetherness. Holidays, birthdays, and celebrations were shared across both sides of the family, creating the kind of closeness their children would later recognize as rare and extraordinary. Their marriage was one of enduring love and commitment because they continually chose each other through every stage of life.

Throughout his life, Jorge followed many paths, guided by both intellectual curiosity and a desire to serve others. He served as a grant writer and researcher at Laredo Junior College, taught courses on border subcultures, and later worked as a health planner for the South Texas Health Systems Agency housed at the Laredo Health Department.

He then founded Forever Fence Building Company, combining his entrepreneurial spirit with his love for working outdoors and building with his hands. Jorge later served as a probation officer for the 49th District Court, the 341st District Court, and the Webb County Court at Law before beginning a long career with the Texas Department of Health and, later, the Texas Department of State Health Services, as a licensed professional sanitarian and health inspector.

His work took him across 19 counties stretching from Brownsville to Corpus Christi to Laredo, inspecting food establishments, schools, daycare centers, etc., while also assisting during hurricane emergencies and foodborne illness outbreaks. He took special pride in helping underserved communities through education, guidance, compassion, and respect.

Jorge retired on November 30, 2010, but retirement never slowed his curiosity or energy. He remained endlessly interested in learning new skills and exploring new ideas. He taught himself woodworking, welding, knife-making, reloading ammunition, and guitar. He could speak just as comfortably about philosophy and spirituality as he could about ranching, cattle, firearms, or the outdoors.

Early in his life he earned the rank of 5th-degree black belt in Shotokan karate, a discipline that reflected the focus and perseverance he carried throughout his life. He offered free karate classes to members of the community and took great joy in teaching his children.

The family ranch was his heaven on Earth. It was more than land; it was the place where family gathered, traditions were passed from one generation to the next, and some of life’s greatest lessons were quietly taught. There, he showed his children and grandchildren the value of hard work, gratitude, stewardship, and respect for nature. Hunting with Jorge was never about sport alone; every animal harvested was treated with gratitude and shared to feed family and friends. Whether mending fences, raising cattle, hunting, fishing, or simply sitting beneath the South Texas sky, Jorge found peace there. Even in his final days, returning to the ranch brought him comfort.

Jorge was known for his charisma, warmth, intelligence, and unforgettable sense of humor. He had an endless collection of jokes and stories, and family gatherings often turned into evenings of laughter. Even after hearing the same jokes many times, he somehow still made them funny.

Jorge believed that a good life was measured not by titles or accomplishments, but by the people you loved, the things you built with your own hands, the curiosity you never lost, and the memories you created along the way. Jorge made certain his own family never doubted they were loved. Saying “I love you with all my heart” became one of the simplest and most meaningful gifts he gave to those closest to him. His greatest joy was not found in any profession, but in his family, the family ranch, a table full of laughter, and the quiet satisfaction of living a life that was fully his own.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Fidel R. and Adelfa Elizondo, and his brothers, Fidel Jr. and Ernesto Elizondo.

He is survived by his loving wife, Norma Elizondo; his children, David, Daniel (wife Margie), Eduardo (partner Will), and Judith Elizondo; his beloved grandsons, Marcos and Ruben Elizondo; his sister-in-law, Edna Elizondo; his nieces, Darlene Pantoja and Illene Alvarado, as well as numerous cousins, other loving relatives, and many friends.

The family will be receiving condolences on Monday evening, August 10, 2026, from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels, 1410 Jacaman Rd., where a Rosary will commence at 7 p.m.

Funeral Services will be conducted on Tuesday morning, August 11, 2026, departing at 9:30 a.m. from Joe Jackson North Funeral Chapels to St. John Neumann Catholic Church for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m.

Rite of Committal and Interment will follow at the Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
