J.J. Gomez Jr.

September 18, 1964 — December 23, 2025

Laredo, Texas

Juan Jose Gomez Jr., a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, departed this life on December 23, 2025, at the age of 61. He was born on September 18, 1964, in Laredo, Texas.

J.J. is preceded in death by his parents, Juan Jose Gomez Sr. and Julieta Guzman, whose legacy of love and support helped shape the man he became.

J.J. was a proud alumni of Martin High School, a member of the Grand Slam Club, where he continued his baseball journey on a scholarship at San Antonio College. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education from Southwest Texas State University, equipping him to inspire and uplift generations of students and athletes.

J.J. was a cherished figure in the world of athletics and education, spending 29 years as a passionate educator. He served for a decade as the head coach at United High School, where he coached both of his sons, A.J. and Daniel. His leadership led to a memorable appearance at the state championship in 2008, a milestone that he proudly shared with his son, A.J. His commitment to fostering the talents of young athletes extended beyond baseball, encompassing coaching positions in football, cross country, and basketball.

J.J.’s love for baseball was so profound that he chose to celebrate his union with his beloved wife, Michelle, on the field at Round Rock. His affinity for the sport continued to flourish as he worked as a camp instructor at the University of Texas at Austin, where he had the honor of learning from the legendary Augie Garrido, and as a contributor to the summer programs at the Round Rock Express.

Moreover, J.J.'s biggest achievement was the completion of the Buena Vista Project which was expected to be completed in March of 2026. He dedicated nine years to the City of Laredo’s Parks and Recreation Department, serving as director for six years. He embraced a philosophy of life that resonated deeply with all he encountered: "We create our own luck; do the little things right and great things will come." He was not merely a coach of athletic prowess but a mentor in the game of life, instilling values that extended far beyond the field.

He leaves behind his beloved wife of 12 years, Michelle C. Gomez, and their cherished children: Anthony Jay Gomez, Daniel Jacob Gomez, Julianne Marie (Julian) Delgado, Jose Maria Reyes III, and Christine Michelle Reyes; grandchildren: Marcus Julian Delgado and Julissa Paige Delgado; brother, Javier Gomez (Selina); nieces and nephews: Victoria Rose Gomez, Troy James Gomez, Andrew Peña, and Ella Peña; mother-in-law, Ana Vazquez and sister-in-law, Ann Pena (Jose).

The family invites all who knew and loved J.J. to join in celebrating the remarkable life he led and the tremendous impact he had on those around him. In this time of mourning, may we find solace in the memories and love he leaves behind. His spirit will forever remain close to those who cherished him.
