Heberto Rendón

April 2, 1933 — October 8, 2020

Heberto ‘Beto’ Rendón Benavides was born in the early morning hours of April 2, 1933 to Raul and Toribia Benavides Rendón. Surrounded by family, Heberto passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 8, 2020.

Heberto’s life’s journey began on the edges of the Rio Salado in the San Rafael de Las Tortillas Ranch in the heart of Mexico. Because his mother passed away when he was very young, he was raised by his father Raul who prepared him for his life teaching him what he knew: how to be a strong, hardworking, independent man. Raul instilled in him a warrior’s spirit and early in life, Heberto set off in search for a better life than could be found by walking the unpaved streets of Las Tortillas. “Con tus propias manos la vida te ganarás y de este rancho te alejarás,” Raul told him.

And though the school bell may have rung, he could not hear it; he heard the sound of a saw and hammer which ignited his passion to create the life his father told him he would build for himself. He headed for the border where he found himself at the mercy of a river much different than the one he left behind. Armed with nothing but pure determination and bravery, he crossed that river. “El Bravo” did not consume him and his new life began in the United States. This new land needed his courageous heart and his strong arms but his beloved ranchito would never become just a memory; the grand love of his life, Elda Maria González San Miguel, waited there for him patiently, even though her Mamá Rosa warned her about “ese Borrado!” Over the 44 years Heberto and Elda were married, they found happiness in the births of their eight sons and daughters. Heberto proudly provided for his family working for HB Zachary over 22 years and, though their journey was not always easy, they were always together. Heberto was a dedicated husband and father whose extraordinary work ethic ensured that his family always had everything they needed. He will be dearly missed by family, friends and those who knew him.

Heberto was preceded in death by his wife Elda G. Rendón, son Heberto Rendón, Jr., his parents Raul and Toribia Rendón and his sisters Elma R. Valenzuela and Magaly Cruz. Left to cherish his memory are his children Jose Luis (Annie) Rendón, Leticia Rendón Garcia, Juan G. (Melissa) Rendón, Dora (Keith) Adkins, Ricardo Rendón (Judi Sepulveda), Raul A. Rendón, Laura (Robert) McCrea, his daughter in law Gloria S. Rendón, his siblings Enriqueta Covarrubias and Juan Manuel Rendón, as well as 15 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, friends and other relatives.
