Dr. Rohitha Goonatilake, a beloved father, devoted educator, and longtime resident of Laredo, Texas, passed away peacefully on October 1st, 2026, at the age of 71.
Born in Sri Lanka, Dr. Goonatilake made several sacrifices to make the journey across the world to build a life in the United States. While his roots remained deeply tied to the culture and traditions of his homeland, it was Laredo that truly became his home. He spent decades planting himself firmly in the community, embracing the culture, warmth, and spirit of South Texas, and dedicating his entire life and career to serving the people of the region.
As a professor at TAMIU since 1999, Dr. Goonatilake was a pillar of academic excellence and mentorship. As faculty at TAMIU, he served Laredo for nearly three decades. He possessed a rare passion for teaching, inspiring countless generations of students to look beyond borders, think critically, and pursue their dreams through education. His colleagues knew him as a man of profound intellect and humility, while his students remember him as a patient guide who genuinely cared for their future.
Beyond the classroom, he was a man of quiet wisdom, gentle humor, and immense generosity. His life was a beautiful testament to the bridge between two worlds—the island where he was born and the border community he loved so deeply.
He is survived by his wife, Chandrika, and his son, Ruchi, and a large circle of extended family, friends, and former students who will continue to carry his legacy forward.
