Consuelo M. Lopez

November 13, 1935 — May 13, 2026

Laredo, Texas

After a life defined by faith, family, resilience, and love, Consuelo M. Lopez, lovingly known to family and friends as “Chelo,” peacefully entered into the presence of the Lord on May 13, 2026, at the age of 90.

While her passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of those who loved her, her family finds comfort in knowing she is reunited with the many loved ones she missed so dearly and now rests in the eternal embrace of God. As the last surviving sibling of her family, Chelo often spoke with peace, faith, and readiness to one day meet her Creator.

Chelo was a proud graduate of Martin High School’s Class of 1954, where she was a member of the French Club. Following graduation, she hoped to attend Santa Rosa Nursing School, but the devastating Flood of 1954 changed the trajectory of her life. Determined to continue her education, she later earned a diploma in Bookkeeping, Accounting, and English-Spanish Secretarial Studies from Southern Business in 1956.

Following high school, Chelo began her professional career at the Laredo Morning Times before later working at Benavides Finance, Mercy Hospital, Laredo National Bank, and the Ernst & Ernst CPA firm, where she gained valuable experience in bookkeeping, accounting, and professional administration.

It was through a mutual friend that she met the love of her life, Carlos Alonzo Lopez Sr. Their first date took place at Lake Casa Blanca, the beginning of a lifelong love story rooted in faith, hard work, and devotion to family. The two married on December 20, 1959. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, friendship, and fun. They especially loved music, dancing, and attending local bailes together, often being among the first on the dance floor. To Carlos, she was his beloved “adorada cositas,” a reflection of the deep love they shared throughout their marriage.

Chelo later worked alongside her husband at Lopez Bookkeeping and Income Tax Service in downtown Laredo. Following Carlos’ passing at a young age, she courageously continued operating the business herself from the historic Sames Moore Building, taking great pride in her work, her professionalism, and the relationships she built throughout the years. She especially enjoyed walking the streets of downtown Laredo, visiting with fellow merchants, and building lasting friendships and connections within the community she loved so dearly.

In the years that followed, Chelo embraced a renewed sense of independence and confidence, continuing to build a life rooted in resilience, faith, friendship, and family. Whether driving through town in her beloved white Mazda truck, gathering with friends, or spending time with those she loved most, she carries herself with strength, grace, and determination.

Above all else, Chelo was the matriarch of her family and the thread that kept generations closely connected. She believed deeply in hard work, responsibility, faith, and caring for those she loved. She held her family to high standards while never expecting more from others than she was willing to give herself first. As the mother of four children raised closely in age, she balanced the demands of work and family life with remarkable strength and devotion while creating a home grounded in love, discipline, and unwavering support.

As her children came of age during the 1970s, music, laughter, and constant activity filled the Lopez household. Their home became the place where family and friends naturally gathered — a welcoming home where doors were open, conversations were endless, and everyone felt treated like family. Chelo took great pride in creating a home filled with warmth, joy, and togetherness.

Family was the center of Chelo’s world. She treasured holidays, birthdays, Sunday visits, and every opportunity to gather the people she loved around long tables filled with food, laughter, stories, and conversation. Some of her happiest moments were spent surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren during family cookouts, especially when ribs — her favorite — were on the menu. She also enjoyed sharing a good margarita with family and friends. Nothing brought Chelo greater pride than watching her family continue to grow across generations.

Chelo was also a loyal and cherished friend who maintained close relationships across state lines and international borders throughout her life. She treasured her weekly Loteria gatherings, where she was frequently a winner, and loved both playing and hosting Bunco, filling her home with laughter, friendship, and cherished memories.

In quieter moments, Chelo enjoyed cheering for her beloved Dallas Cowboys and Dallas Mavericks, watching her favorite crime dramas and medical shows, spending her Saturdays enjoying a movie at the theater, and relaxing with fresh mango or watermelon always close at hand.

Family and friends often described Chelo as elegant — a quality reflected not only in the way she dressed, but in the way she carried herself through life. She was always impeccably dressed, took pride in her appearance, and rarely missed a visit to the beauty salon. Her pride in presentation extended beyond herself and into the beautiful home and garden she lovingly maintained throughout the years. Whether through her beautifully styled hair, perfectly manicured nails, welcoming home, or the grace with which she treated others, Chelo brought warmth, dignity, and beauty into every room she entered.

Throughout her life, Chelo answered to many beloved names — “Mom,” “Ma,” “Mami,” “Abuela,” “Gram,” and “Guely.” Each reflected the countless ways she loved, guided, protected, and shaped the generations of her family.

Her faith guided her through every season of life and remained a constant source of strength and comfort. Family members lovingly counted on Chelo’s daily morning prayers, which reflected her deep devotion to God and unwavering love for those she carried in her heart each day.

Throughout her life, Chelo faced hardships and challenges that would have caused many others to give up long before she ever considered doing so. From the Flood of 1954 that altered her early dreams, to the demands of balancing motherhood, professional life, personal loss, and later significant health struggles, she met every chapter of her life with determination, grace, and unwavering resilience.

“And that’s the story of my life,” she once said — words that now beautifully summarize a life marked by perseverance, sacrifice, faith, and unconditional love.

To her family, those words perfectly captured the woman she was — hardworking, selfless, resilient, faithful, and deeply devoted to those she loved. Chelo was strong, and through her example, she made her family strong in return.

Though her family’s hearts are broken by her passing, they take comfort in knowing that Chelo’s love, traditions, strength, and spirit will continue to live on through the generations she helped shape.

And to the family and friends she loved so deeply, Chelo leaves behind the words she never got tired of saying:

“I love you bunches and bunches.”
